CLAIRE DANSON:

Claire worked for us as a student for a number of summers. She was hugely popular with her colleagues and customers and is a family friend.
In 2019 Claire suffered horrific injuries in a road cycling accident and as a result severed heer spinal cord at T7 and so is now paralysed from her belly button down. She is inspirational in her determination. Having been a world class athlete, becoming European Triathlete Champion shortly before her accident, she remains a formidable athlete with high ambitions to reach the paralympics. Her grit and determination are somwthing to behold.

Our collection in 2020 was for Claire for a training aid to use on her bike at home so that she can challenge herself, ride with her old team mates etc. We were delighted to be able to give her £750 to this end, thanks to you, our customers.
She continues with her tutoring of young students and is living a full life despite her limitations.

You can follow Claire on her facebook story and also on instagram at @cdanson10

OTHER ORGANISATIONS:

We do not advertise for anyone but do, from time to time, list people who may be of interest to our customers.
Those listed are local people / organisations that we have direct knowledge of and who we are happy to support in this way.
In these pandemic times, where life has been very difficult for so many, the following listing will hopefully be of help to them and some of our customers.

HOOK HOUSE HOTEL, HOOK

A warm welcome awaits you at this family run small hotel.
They do wonderful take away pizzas (07706 997714) and also pizza picnics in their grounds when the weather and Covid rules permit.
New for the year is The Dunched - you've heard of Brunch - well, this is the lunch / dinner equivalent. Its brilliant!
They cater for private parties, functions and weddings of all sizes in their beautiful hotel and permanent marquee.
Visit www.hookhousehotel.com or call 01256 760232

Hook House also has an inhouse artist, Moira Stewart, who is not only talented and paints wonderful wildlife and countryside paintings but also does fantastic pet portraits.
Her paintings are displayed in the public rooms at Hook House and are just gorgeous.

SOPHIE ROSE BRIDAL:

Sophie lives near Odiham and designs and makes the most beautiful and unique wedding dresses.
You may even have seen her window in Odiham.
Our daughter Georgie looked stunning in hers and as a girl who is very tall it was a joy to find a dress that fitted her proportions exactly.
Sophie will adapt any design just for you and her prices are very reasonable in the scheme of wedding dresses.
The whole experience was one of happiness and calm.

May 31, 2021

Firstly, we hope that all of our customers have had a reasonable, or better, winter since we last saw you between lockdown and Covid. It's been such a difficult year for so many people and our hope is that your families have not been too adversly affected.

Regarding life at West Green Fruits, there is a saying - "be careful what you wish for"! The rain came in May and whilst it hasn’t been awful, I imagine many of you would like it to stop! It has come in steady doses in quantums of around 10mm, which has been good and there is another old saying that goes “a cold wet May fills the barns with corn and hay”. We're hoping it does.

Today, it’s a gorgeous May Bank Holiday Monday, with hordes on the beaches and anywhere else that one might enjoy travelling to and thus it is a little warmer than we’ve been used to. We have probably had sufficient rain now to carry us through for our strawberries etc and the farm crops (mainly wheat this year), including grass for hay and a bit of warmth does a lot of good. It’s such a relief after last Spring’s drought which you may remember meant our strawberries were not as plentiful as normal.

The raspberry plants are coming on well and despite the overall cooler temperatures this Spring they look nicely spread in terms of their development. The strawberries, even those under fleece to bring them forward like a greenhouse, are behind for the time of year and so a slightly later start in the PYO fields is on the cards. That said, nature could play catch up and surprise us. It often does.

Other than finishing the last sessions of potting up raspberries, May has been used to build ‘tabletops’ for holding grow-bags for a later small crop of strawberries. Apart from extending the season (everyone always wants a strawberry!) this will also allow easier access for some customers who cannot pick from the ground. Our trial on bales last year, which you may remember, was popular and this permanent arrangement will be better on several levels.

The rhubarb patch went mad once the rain got into the soil and so, once again, we had a Sunday morning rhubarb sale so that the plants were thinned and the fruit not wasted. It took three of us most of Saturday to pull, trim and sort the stems (and generate sore backs and legs) but it was a good job jobbed, and it was so nice to see our customers again while getting into our summer groove a little bit. The shop has been partly prepared and the rest will follow shortly.

The general farm crops have at last taken off with the rain and improved temperatures, compared to April, and so are beginning to look productive. Driving around over the last few days there are fields of grass being cut for winter silage at last, which is stored for animal feed for next winter. Hay is a later June crop needing warmth and good sunshine, ideally around 5 days, to dry it sufficiently while silage only needs wilting and hence is earlier.

That said, with grass growth for cropping its also growing in the fruit field and so we are now mowing like mad around the fruit plots so it’s ready for opening later in June when we look forward to welcoming you back.

We will, of course, keep any arrangements in place for Covid reasons, as last year, but your experience should not be hindered even so.

Enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday and we look forward to seeing you later in june along with our staff all of whom are returning.

Best wishes
Andrew and Carolyn x

Visits

We enjoy visits from a variety of groups / organisations, of all age groups, each year during the fruit season within opening hours but these must be arranged in advance.

We can cater for visits from organisations such as nursery schools and beavers, brownies etc as well as informative visits for clubs and organisations wishing to learn a little about what we do, both with the Pick Your Own and also the farm in general.

However, we will not accomodate coaches or mini buses without explicit prior arrangement. There are no exceptions to this situation and buses and mini-buses without prior arrangements in place will be turned away.

Please contact Carolyn either by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone: 07954 730143 (during shop hours) to discuss you needs.

For most such visits we do not make a charge but all fruit picked must be paid for.
Additionally, depending upon the nature of your visit we may ask for a donation for our chosen charities for the year.

Sponsorship and Donations

Every year we are asked to donate fruit or sponsor different events.

We are delighted to be able to support local organisations and charities but we have to limit the level of annual donations we are able to make, and do not promote other businesses except of our own choosing.

Please feel free to contact us regarding sponsorship and donations but with the understanding that we may not be able to help you at that particular time.

One form of 'sponsorship' that we are very keen to encourage is that asked for by our younger customers who make jams etc to sell to raise funds for local schools and charities.

LINKS

The people and organisations we 'LINK' with are local and chosen only by us and not by request.
We do not list corporate organisations.
We hope you understand.

We open on Saturday 26, June
NO BOOKING needed, just arrive!

COVID-19 statement for 2021 PYO Season
We will be operating West Green Fruits very much as you would recognise while looking after our staff, ourselves and of course all of our customers and visitors.

With this in mind we will operate with measures to help keep customers and staff safe. There is no need to pre-book to visit, but we cannot take coaches or mini-bus parties without explicit prior agreement..

We ask that our customers help us with this, and we know that you will:

  • Please respect other people's space while you are with us
  • Please pay by contactless payment if at all possible (we are still unable to accept American Express)
  • Please only enter our shop when there is a free till for you
Collect any produce from the veg/fruit display on your way
In this way we can give everyone a comfortable space within the shop
  • Our jams, honey, free range eggs, ice-cream and cream will be served from behind the tills where there is a clear display for you to see and choose from (very old fashioned!) - just ask for what you would like to buy
  • Pic-nics can only be had near the shop, and not anywhere else on site.
If you need to sit and rest please come back and do so near the shop so that we don't have to come and ask

PYO ETIQUETTE - 'Pick, Pay, Eat'

The rules of Pick Your Own are very simple.

We apologise to those customers and visitors who do not need any explanation,

BUT to avoid any misunderstanding:

  • All visitors and customers must understand that West Green Fruits is a business
  •  'Pick Your Own' means 'Pick and Pay for all you pick before Eating'.
  • Our business still operates on honesty meaning that everything you and your group pick (whatever your ages) must be paid for before any is eaten.
  • Please only pick what you are prepared to pay for. Prices are clearly stated and staff will advise you on likely costs before you pick, if asked.
  • It is not acceptable to change your mind if you pick too much.
  • Please supervise children and teach them not to jump or trample over or through crops - it causes damage.
  • Eating fruit whilst picking or before paying is theft and unacceptable.
  • We reserve the right to restrict entry or ask visitors to leave

  • When you have finished picking bring everything you have picked to our shop where there is a selection of summer vegetables, jams, honey, eggs etc
  • Your fruit and vegetables will be weighed and charged accordingly along with any other produce you chose.
  • Please keep your till receipt whilst you are on site for any checks we are making.

We cannot re-use dirty baskets that are discarded and so please only take what you need.

You are very welcome to bring your own containers if you prefer, just get them weighed at the meet and greet point before you go picking so that we can deduct their weight when you return to pay.

Dogs are not allowed on site other than in a vehicle, where they must stay.

The only exception is for assistance dogs such as a guide dog or hearing dog.
This is an insurance and Environmental Health Department requirement.

We are dog lovers ourselves and have 4, but they are not walked in the the fruit fields all summer, even outside of working hours.

Other Summer Produce:

Jude's Ice-cream

Since 2018 we have stocked Jude's Ice-Cream and their Mango Sorbet for those who have dairy and gluten free needs in single portion sized pots.
We also stock their vegan salted caramel and vanilla flavours.
If you're having a party we can obtain a wide selection of flavours in larger, or even 4litre, sizes.

Jams and Marmalades

These are made especially for us by the lovely Janet and Amy and bear our own 'West Green Fruits' labels.

Marmalades are made with fruit from foreign parts but the jams are predominently from our own fruit, picked by us.
The marmalades are quite a speciality and our range includes more than just Seville Orange Marmalade.

Jam Sugar & Jars

Jam sugar (with added pectin) and jam jars with lids are available.

Chutneys

Made locally by Pig 'n Pickles in many 'flavours'.

Channel Island Cream

We now stock delicious Jersey Cream from Ivy House Farm. Nearly as thick as clotted cream and, in our opinion, even nicer!

Local Honey

English Honey is ever rarer but our supplier's honey is certainly English Honey at its very best.

Our honey is from local producers and one day we may even have our own home produced honey made with nectar from the PYO fruit flowers in due course.
Bee keeping remains in its infancy here. Our bees are more like well  looked after pets than productive members of our little ecosystem!!

Free Range Eggs

The truly delicious eggs we sell are from happy hens that live in Mattingley, a couple of miles away, on a farm that has been producing wonderful Free Range Eggs since long before ethical egg production was considered the right way to do things. When they are unable to supply their own they work in conjunction with another producer of their own ilk and so you can be sure that the eggs we sell are good in every sense.
Try some and you'll be converted by their freshness and flavour.
When these are unavailable we hvae eggs from an equally ethical free range egg farm at Wokingham.

Summer Vegtables

A selection of ready picked summer vegtables are always available, including ever popular new potatoes.
if there is anything specific you would like us to obtain for you please ask.
We no longer grow any vegetables on site, but they come from market daily and wherever possible our produce is British.

CHARITY DONATIONS

Every year our customers have generously supported our chosen charity.
Last year, 2020, £750 was given to Claire Danson who is now paralysed from the waist down following a catastrophic cycling accident.
She was European Triathalon Champsion at the time of her injury and is now building up as a successful para-athlete. Our donation has enabled her to buy specialist equipment to help with her training. THANK YOU everyone.

However, the drop in cash useage has led to all charities feeling the pinch as card sales have increased.
Thus, we now ask customers if they would like to make donations added to their card payments. Any donations will be accounted for on the till and then passed to our chosen cause.

This year, we will be passing your donations to THE MATTHEW ELVIDGE TRUST once again which works to destigmatise depression amongst the young and help those in need via carefully chosen organisations within and outside of the world of education.

Full details for our charitable donations for 2021 can be found on our Family Fun page and we thank you inadvance for any generosity that you feel able to give in this difficult year that is affecting so very many people.

2021 Christmas Barn

We also sell unusual baubles, candles and our normal selection of Jams, Marmalades, Chutneys and Honey for those 'little gifts'.

Our Christmas Barn opens in late November.
We are open SEVEN days a week once open until either 22nd December or until we sell out of trees.
